So your student is taking Spanish...
Spanish class looks different than science or math, and it can seem like you won't be able to help your student succeed if you don't know the language. Fear not, there are still many ways to help! Top 10 list for achieving success for your son or daughter in the study of a second language 1. Encourage them to do the homework or study the vocabulary daily. 2. Ask them to show you their work, good or bad. 3. Have them "show off" what they have learned at the dinner table. 4. Take them to a Mexican restaurant and have them order in Spanish. 5. Embrace the opportunity to take them to a cultural exhibit or explore a virtual one. 6. Watch the Spanish language TV station and ask your student to explain the main idea or point out what words they recognize. 7. Invite them to teach you some of the words that they are learning in the classroom. 8. Help them get their materials in order by showing them organizational skills. 9. Require them to see their teacher when they need additional help. 10. Praise them when they have done well and encourage them to seek help if they are having difficulty. * list adapted from David Malatesta at https://sites.google.com/a/d219.org/davmal/forparents Resources Encourage your student to use conjuguemos.com to review vocabulary! |
Free Voluntary Reading
Reading helps students develop core vocabularies and strengthens their skills in Spanish. We will read several novels as a class and students will also have 5 minutes twice a week to read independently. Students may pick a book from my class library, check out one from a local library, or buy their own (I'm happy to offer recommendations). |
